Overview

Massaquerade is the third game that I made alongside a friend, this time for the Winter MelonJam 2025. "Mask" was the theme for this jam. We incoroproated this through creating a murder mystery game where you are the murderer at a masquerade ball and must find your target. You can play the game directly though the embed above, or you can visit the itch.io page.

By far the biggest thing I learned about through this jam was how to do dialogue. We did a JSON based system which you could define flags to set, flags to check, the next piece to go to, and many other options. Not only was building this scalable system a challenge, but it was also quite difficult to try and write all the dialogue itself.

How To Play

The game is quite simple, it's the mystery that might be a little hard. You have to go around and interact with people to gather clues. These clues might open up dialogue options that weren't previously available, even to people you're already talked to before. Once you've decided who your target is, that is when you strike. Good luck!

Results

Once again, we did pretty well. Overall we got 36th out of 200 submissions, with our highest score being 17th place in the "Art" category. Our second highest was "Gameplay" (the most important category) at 39th place.

One of the main differences between this game and the previous ones is that I was not as happy with how this one turned out. In this game, it felt like our main limitation was how fast we could write dialogue instead of adding cooler systems and interactions with the game. Regardless, I still had a great time working on it and am proud of what we accomplished.
